Temporary Sign Permit Instructions
  1. One or more temporary ground signs per parcel constructed of poster board, cardboard, masonite, plywood or plastic material and mounted to wood frames or supports.
    • Sign height: less than four (4) feet; Sign area: less than six (6) square feet per side; Setback: more than fifteen (15+) feet
    • A bond of $50.00 per sign is required
    • Display limited to thirty (30) days every six (6) months
  2. Temporary signs erected during the period of time extending from thirty-one (31) days before through five (5) days after any scheduled primary, general, local and/or special election.
    • Signs may be erected at more than one location, providing that all signs are of the same information content.
    • Time allowed for these temporary signs shall not be counted against the thirty (30) day time limitation of #1 above.
    • Temporary ground signs erected under thee provisions also includes signs that are mounted to or on metal or plastic frames or supports.
    • The requirement of sign height in #1 also apply.
  3. Attention-getting devices as indicated below may be used for the grand opening of a new or relocated business for no more that thirty consecutive days:
    • Balloons
    • Spinners
    • Streamers
    • Searchlights, but not to exceed seven (7) consecutive days
  4. See Sections 1185.07 through 1185.13 for additional provisions for temporary signs.

Temporary Sign Permits are not required for signs that meet the following standards (Real Estate signs are included under this provision):

  • One (1) sign per parcel constructed of metal facing and framing.
  • Sign height: less than four (4) feet; Sign area: less than six (6) square feet per side; Setback: more than fifteen (15+) feet
In the event of a conflict between the list of requirements listed here and the requirements of Chapter 1185, Sign Regulations, Chapter 1185 shall prevail.

Permanent Sign Permit Instructions

What do I have to do to receive a permit?

  • Attach a copy of a drawing, sketch or photo of the sign indicating the sign dimensions.
  • Also submit a copy of a drawing showing the location of proposed and existing signs on the site and/or building, all drawn to scale (e.g. 1 inch = 30 feet).
  • The information given on the application should be in compliance with the requirements of Chapter 1185 of the Zoning Code.

What’s the next step?

  • When review of the application is completed you will be notified by email if additional information is required.  Permits or denials are issued by email to the applicant. The review period is normally a minimum of three (3) business days if sufficient information has been provided with the application.

Additional Permits?

  • A Building Permit from Montgomery County Building Regulations may be required prior to installation. Please discuss the need for permits with the County at 937-225-4622 or 451 W Third St, 10th Floor, Dayton.
